Sisters In Mind celebrated 20 years since its regeneration

This week, Sisters in Mind took a joyful leap into the heart of East London with a visit to Spitalfields Market, celebrating 20 years since its regeneration. A small group of us set off with curiosity, laughter and comfy shoes ready to explore the layers of history, creativity, and community that make Spitalfields so special.

Spitalfields Market has been part of London’s fabric since 1638, when King Charles gave permission for a market to be held on Spital Square. Originally a place for selling meat and produce, it evolved into a bustling wholesale fruit and veg market. After the wholesale traders moved out in the early '90s, the market was reborn blending Victorian charm with modern flair. Today it is a vibrant space where tradition and trendiness walk hand in hand.

As we strolled through the old London streets, the atmosphere was rich with character. A kind gentleman at a hat stall gave us a brief history of the market, sparking memories and smiles. Our group were drawn to stalls filled with vintage clothing, handmade ceramics, crocheted trinkets and quirky jewellery though some prices had us raising our eyebrows and giggling.

One stall had a collection of retro mobile phones, including a working “brick phone” that felt like a time capsule from the '90s. It was a nostalgic treat that had us reminiscing about simpler times (and heavier handbags). ‘I enjoyed looking at the phones on the stall I had a few of them when I was young’

The market was a melting pot of cultures, buzzing with energy and delicious smells. From sizzling street food to artisan donuts that one of our ladies couldn’t stop admiring (we don’t blame her they looked divine), there was something for every craving. Another member was captivated by a “pick and mix” jewellery stall and found some truly dazzling pieces.

We decide to have a look at live singing and dancing, we didn’t hit the dance floor ourselves, but we loved watching others sway to live music and ballroom dancing including a few tunes by the legendary Fred Astaire. It added a magical touch to the day, like stepping into an old movie scene.

And yes, the toilets were nearby and clean a small but mighty detail that made the day even smoother!

Two of our ladies were visiting Spitalfields for the first time and left already planning their next trip. The market offered something for everyone from history buffs to fashion lovers and reminded us how joyful it is to explore new places with good company.

A huge thank you to the staff who joined us they were warm, attentive and made sure we stayed together throughout the trip. No wandering off this time, just shared laughter, love, and a sense of playfulness that made the experience unforgettable.

This wasn’t just a day out it was a celebration of connection, curiosity and community. We laughed, we explored, we admired and maybe drooled over donuts. It’s the kind of outing we would love to do again and we hope more of our Sisters in Mind can join us next time.
